The island of Foula lies approx 15 miles west of the Shetland mainland. On a clear day it can be seen from Orkney due to its height of 1,371 feet. The spectacular cliffs tower up to 1,200 feet above the sea, the second highest in the UK.
Facilities on the island are limited. The harbour at Ham can provide a safe berth in summer, but can be untenable in higher winds particularly from the south east or north north-east.
The harbour is used several days a week by the ferry but can normally comfortably accommodate two yachts alongside. The depth at the inner end of the pier is around 1.5m but the majority is between 2 and 2.5m+, all depths at chart datum.
A Ranger service provided by the community offers guided walks of the island and is recommended for those interested in the challenging coastal paths.
